We carefully source our materials. As often as we can, we make our leather shoes from recycled upholstery and jacket leather. When we buy new leather, we inspect the hides for small scars that indicate the leather comes from animals who lived a humane free-ranging life. We also recycle wood from our cabinetry business. We use scraps to make wooden blocks that we then shape into shoe forms (called Lasts). We make heels from recycled floor boards. We try to incorporate all of our waste back into our process. We make all of our products as they are ordered. That helps us to reduce waste. We choose not to waste effort or material. We have bins full of scrap waiting to be used in other stages of our process. On occasion, we donate these to be incorporated into the process of others. We make approximately seventy percent of our outsole out of newly purchased material. We have yet to find a way around this. But, we are always looking. And, always happy to take suggestions as to how to make our process less wasteful. The leather that we use to make our outsole comes from various sources. We purchase our new leather from Oregon Leather Company. Leather is a bi-product of the slaughter industry. We do not buy leather from sources who raise animals specifically for their skin. The impact absorbing aspects of our insoles are made by us from pre-consumer recycled waste... We build new sheets of memory foam, from the many tiny clippings we save from our own process, and collect from other's. We do not recycle post-consumer insole materials. All of our leather, whether it is recycled or new is lovingly conditioned. Your shoes will be as new. We also, make non-animal, vegan shoes. We use recycled materials such as seat belt material, dust collector bag canvas, truck tarps, rubberized canvas, sign vinyl, and many other products as we come across them. We also make non-animal shoes out of new materials if you should choose. All man made material has an impact on the environment. Whether it is processed bamboo, rubber, cotton, soy, or synthetic its handling produces waste. We believe that moderation and diversified sourcing is the key to sustainability. We invite you to inquire with us about our practices. We recycle to cut costs. We pass that savings on to our employees and our customers. We recycle to help reduce our impact on the environment. We realize that there are things to do in the future by people we'll never meet. There are more important things than shoes. For the record, we put a lot of effort into controlling all the aspects of our production. That's something that just makes sense to us at this time in history. We do so to try and balance the practice of manufacturing with the needs of society and the environment. In the end, the person who has the smallest impact upon the environment is the person who does not engage in the production of new things. Manufacturing, by nature, is something that will use up all of its own and other's resources sometime before the sun burns out.
